Lem started his literary work in 1946 with a number of publications in different genres, including poetry, as well as his first science fiction novel, The Man from Mars ( Człowiek z Marsa), serialized in Nowy Świat Przygód ( New World of Adventures). Lem said that the sight of blood was one of the reasons he decided to drop medicine. After receiving absolutorium (Polish term for the evidence of completion of the studies without diploma), he did an obligatory monthly work at a hospital, at a maternity ward, where he assisted at a number of childbirths and a caesarean section. He did not take his final examinations on purpose, to avoid the career of military doctor, which he suspected could have become lifelong. In 1945, Lwow was annexed into the Soviet Ukraine, and the family, along with many other Polish citizens, was resettled to Kraków, where Lem, at his father's insistence, took up medical studies at the Jagiellonian University. So it was, strictly speaking, only the Nazi legislation that brought home to me the realization that I had Jewish blood in my veins.ĭuring that time, Lem earned a living as a car mechanic and welder, and occasionally stole munitions from storehouses (to which he had access as an employee of a German company) to pass them on to the Polish resistance. I knew that my ancestors were Jews, but I knew nothing of the Mosaic faith and, regrettably, nothing at all of Jewish culture. He would later recall: ĭuring that period, I learned in a very personal, practical way that I was no " Aryan". During the subsequent Nazi occupation (1941–1944), Lem's Jewish family avoided placement in the Nazi Lwów Ghetto, surviving with false papers. Īfter the 1939 Soviet occupation of western Ukraine and Belarus, he was not allowed to study at Lwow Polytechnic as he wished because of his " bourgeois origin", and only due to his father's connections he was accepted to study medicine at Lwów University in 1940. In later years he would call himself both an agnostic and an atheist. the world appears to me to be put together in such a painful way that I prefer to believe that it was not created. He later became an atheist "for moral reasons. In later years Lem sometimes claimed to have been raised Roman Catholic, but he went to Jewish religious lessons during his school years. He was the son of Sabina née Woller (1892–1979) and Samuel Lem (1879–1954), a wealthy laryngologist and former physician in the Austro-Hungarian Army, and first cousin to Polish poet Marian Hemar (Lem's father's sister's son). According to his own account, he was actually born on 13 September, but the date was changed to the 12th on his birth certificate because of superstition. Lem was born in 1921 in Lwów, interwar Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine). 4 on Bohdan Lepky Street in Lviv, where, according to his autobiography Highcastle, Lem spent his childhood The Polish Parliament declared 2021 Stanisław Lem Year. Translating his works is difficult due to Lem's elaborate neologisms and idiomatic wordplay. His essays and philosophical books cover these and many other topics. Lem's science fiction works explore philosophical themes through speculations on technology, the nature of intelligence, the impossibility of communication with and understanding of alien intelligence, despair about human limitations, and humanity's place in the universe. Lem is the author of the fundamental philosophical work Summa Technologiae, in which he anticipated the creation of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and also developed the ideas of human autoevolution, the creation of artificial worlds, and many others. In 1976 Theodore Sturgeon wrote that Lem was the most widely read science fiction writer in the world. Worldwide, he is best known as the author of the 1961 novel Solaris. Lem's books have been translated into more than 50 languages and have sold more than 45 million copies. Many of his science fiction stories are of satirical and humorous character. Stanisław Herman Lem ( Polish: ( listen) 12 September 1921 – 27 March 2006) was a Polish writer of science fiction and essays on various subjects, including philosophy, futurology, and literary criticism.

Preparing the spriteįor my first model I stuck to the basics. With those 2 things you can almost start making models. I used it to erase a few voxels, and then changed to attach to add some voxels. In fact, if you look at the hintbox in that gif, you will understand that I picked the Voxel brush, with the task erase. That box will teach you what your tools are, the shortcuts to become a power user as soon as possible, and it will even flirt with you (ok, maybe I made that last part up… Or did I?) Ok, ok, I know I just wrote 3 times in a row that you need to look at the hintbox (hehe, another one), but that’s because that hintbox is what stands between being lost and actually know what’s going on. In MagicaVoxel the first thing you need to look at is the Hintbox at the bottom. The first thing you need to look at is the Hintbox at the bottom There is a lot going on for a first timer, but there is one trick to understand it very quickly. Once you are up and running, don’t be afraid of MagicaVoxel’s interface. If you are new to Linux, (like me) you can install PlayOnLinux and follow this installation tutorial. If you want to get started, download MagicaVoxel. The entry barrier is so low, that even I, using a not so great linux laptop (which makes things harder), got around to making my first model in a few hours. One of such revolutions is the 3D pixel, also known as voxel.ĭoing voxel art appeals to me not only due to its beauty, but also due to its simplicity. This renaissance of the pixels has pushed the art to new possibilities that were not available back when I was a kid. Recently we have seen a rise in this art style due to nostalgia (and the fact that it is awesome). Since I grew up in the 8-bit era of gaming consoles pixelart always seduced me with its charm. Being passionate for 3D and looking at great artworks like Van Gogh’s room, made me want to give 3D modelling a try. As part of the job I get to look at great models everyday from some of the best 3D artists out there. Reduced Dependency on Fossil Fuels: Using eco-resins helps decrease reliance on finite fossil fuels, which are not only environmentally damaging but also becoming scarcer and more expensive.īiodegradable and Compostable: Some eco-resins are biodegradable or compostable, making them a more sustainable option in the long run. This results in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and a positive impact on climate change Lower Carbon Footprint: Eco-resins have a lower carbon footprint than petroleum-based resins, as they are derived from renewable resources. Some eco-resins may also contain a blend of bio-based and petroleum-based components to improve their performance characteristics. Other bio-based components can include cellulose, natural fibers (e.g., hemp, flax, jute), and biopolymers (e.g., polylactic acid or PLA). Here's an overview of eco-resins and their properties:Ĭomposition: The most common eco-resins are made from plant-derived monomers, such as epoxidized soybean oil, linseed oil, and castor oil. In science articles, tone is used to indicate the attitude of the writer toward theories under discussion. In journalism, tone is important for distinguishing facts that must be reported from opinions that should be left to the readers' judgment. In literature, tone can be used to indicate whether a story is told objectively or subjectively, i.e., from a first-person or third-person perspective. The use of tone is particularly important in comedy, where the humor comes from the contrast between what people think is happening around them and how they react to it. If the person is happy, she may be able to keep this mood inside herself without showing it on her face or in her body language. For example, someone who is angry or upset will often speak in a loud voice with raised eyebrows. It can also suggest their internal thoughts. In theater, film, and radio, tone is used to distinguish characters' attitudes toward each other or events occurring around them. A document in formal language tends to be more serious and important than one written in an informal style thus, tone can be used to indicate the difference between them. The writer establishes a relationship with the reader by transmitting this attitude through tone, which determines the aim and meaning of the written words. Tone is a literary technique that indicates the writer's attitude toward a literary work's subject matter or audience. What is the definition of "tone" in drama? For example, if the author wants to criticize something, he or she would probably start with a general statement followed by specific examples. In addition to using different words, essays with different tones often have different structures as well. Using different forms of language helps keep essays interesting for readers. When talking about something fun, you would use lighter language and make jokes. For example, if the author wants to criticize something, he or she would probably do so in a harsh tone using strong language. Generally, essays with different tones use different forms of language to express themselves. Also, paragraphs with different tones help break up the monotony of writing about the same thing for too long because they offer something new to read. This helps readers understand various topics related to music better because they are reading about something that interests them. For example, when discussing several subjects related to music, a paragraph with a critical tone could discuss one aspect of music while a more light-hearted paragraph could talk about another aspect. Paragraphs with different tones can help readers understand the subject better by comparing differences and similarities between them. Each paragraph in an essay should have its own unique tone. The tone of a paragraph may be determined by considering the audience, assessing the grammar and diction, and utilizing mood to identify the author's tone. Tone is the author's attitude toward a topic, character, or overall circumstance. Math can be considered a necessary evil therefore, some people dislike it while others love it. For example, if you wrote "I hate math," this statement has an informal tone because you can tell that someone doesn't like math by their choice of words. With informal language, you can say what you want, but not everything you say will be accepted by everyone. Informal tone is used in letters, social conversation, and self-written texts. For example, if you write "You can't come into my office without having a reason," this statement has a formal tone because it is made up of long sentences with complex vocabulary. When writing in a formal tone, it is important to be aware of vocabulary and sentence structure because these elements can be perceived as arrogant or condescending by some readers. With formal language, you should use proper grammar and punctuation. Generally, there are two types of tones: formal and informal.įormal tone is used when writing in a professional setting or at a university. The tone used by an author in a piece of literature may elicit a wide range of feelings and opinions. Tone is a literary phrase that relates to the mood conveyed by an author's word choices and how the text might make a reader feel. A recall meeting of the bus reps called by the Bus Combine decided not to recommend the deal. A few days before that the officer who had been in contact with management tried to get agreement to recommend a three year deal. The strike was due to start on Thursday 16th.
